Literature Text

What started as a spark,
A gleam of radiant light
Chases out monsters of the dark
And burns softly in the night.

Who began life as a hopeful child,
A beam of luminous delight
Had dreams too far fetched and wild,
Passion blazed so ever bright.
And every day,
Brightens the world just a little more
Like a candle’s golden ray.

The old soul that longs for purpose
Is the flickering flame
That struggles against the wind.
Flickering, fluctuating, wavering,
But miraculously holds its ground.

It melts steadily and quick,
Dissolves and fizzles out,
Dying at the wick.
It doesn’t last the night,
But casts a lovely light.

Whether I’ll be the candle that burns out,
Or gradually fades away,
At this point is hard to say,
Though it will all end the same.
But even so,
All of the world’s darkness
Cannot extinguish the light
Of a candle’s single flame.
Over time, it's easy to lose the hope and optimism you once had in abundance. Harsh realities, in addition to discouragement and self-doubt, are the winds that try to extinguish your light. But when you take no heed to everything that attempts to knock you down, you are especially graceful, a candle in the wind.

I wrote this because I sometimes feel that I'm burnt out, but I still hold onto hope that 'it will get better.' My mom makes candles, and I couldn't help but to think of a candle in the wind when reflecting on anyone going through a difficult time in their lives, but instead of giving up, persevering through it and becoming even stronger because of it.
